In last week’s blog Impossible Goal 2020 Part 1, I shared with you why you should set impossible goals for the coming year, and how to trick your brain into letting you do this—how to “feel the fear and do it anyway.”

This week, I want to share with you how to get started setting your impossible goal(s) for 2020. Keep in mind, as I mentioned last week, discomfort and negative emotion are part of the growth experience. You may struggle with setting an impossible goal, but when you open yourself up to doing the impossible and are willing to fail, you gain the confidence to keep striving toward your impossible goal and the next impossible goal.

Here are the steps to get started to set your 2020 impossible goal:

  1. Consider where you want to be one year from now.
    What is the opportunity cost of not achieving your dream? Escape fails are the biggest dream stealers out there, because it means you fail before you even start.
  2. Take out a sheet of paper and write down all of the impossible goals you would like to focus on this year. Fill in every line on your sheet of paper.
  3. Pick only one goal from the list. Don’t take a lot of time—pick something you know will do a great job of growing you as a person.
  4. Write down your impossible goal and the exact results that prove it has been achieved. For example, if you have an income goal, your result to prove it might be your W2, 1099, or tax return.
  5. Make a list of all of the strategies you will use to achieve your impossible goal.
  6. Create a list of 25 worthy fails per quarter. Yes, you will plan to fail 25 times per quarter on the way to achieving your impossible goal.
  7. Revisit your goal daily, and coach yourself through any discomfort.

Once you have established your impossible goal, it is important to start to visualize achieving your goal. Here are some of the questions I ask myself regularly as it relates to hitting my impossible goal:

  • Who do I need to be? How is this different from who I am now, and how do I act from my future self?
  • What am I willing to stake?
  • What do I need to think?
  • How do I need to feel?
  • What do I need to do?
  • How do I need to show up to hit my goal?

I encourage you to pick one impossible goal, and notice how it makes you feel. Remember, you already know it’s impossible and you are going to fail along the way. Another huge aha for me as part of this process is that timeframe is not as important as I used to think. Once I have committed to my impossible goal, I am committed to achieving it no matter how long it takes.

My current 2020 goal is the same as last year, as I have not achieved it yet. However, I am happy to report that I am currently on track to hit it this year. In my past, I would have given up and been frustrated if I didn’t achieve the goal in the year that I set it. My advice is to go for it—commit to something you know will change your life, and don’t give up. You will be amazed at the growth you will experience as you enjoy the journey.
